The Backstab Problem in LA Homes

If you live in a home built during the 1970s or 1980s anywhere in the LA area, there’s a good chance your outlets were installed using “backstab” connections. That’s where the wire is pushed into a spring-loaded hole in the back of the outlet instead of wrapped around the screw terminal. It’s faster for the installer, but the spring weakens over time. The connection loosens. Loose connections arc. Arcing generates heat. And heat in a plastic outlet box next to dry wood framing is how electrical fires start.

We see backstabbed outlets on nearly every service call in homes from that era. When we replace an outlet, we re-terminate every connection on screw terminals. It takes a minute longer and it makes the connection significantly more reliable for the next 20 years.

How Does a GFCI Outlet Work?

A GFCI constantly monitors the current that flows through it. If the current flowing from the hot slot to the neutral slot in the outlet is imbalanced, the outlet will trip the circuit. Once that happens, no power will be available at that outlet or any downstream receptacles. The outlet can respond in 1/30 of a second, preventing a shock from touching an exposed wire or using an electrical device exposed to water.

GFCI Protection: Where You Need It and Why

GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) outlets monitor for current leaking where it shouldn’t be and cut power in a fraction of a second. They prevent electrocution. California code requires GFCI protection in bathrooms, kitchens (all countertop outlets), garages, unfinished basements, outdoor locations, laundry areas, and near any sink.

Older homes built before GFCI requirements don’t have them in these locations. That doesn’t make them exempt. It means the protection hasn’t been installed yet. Adding GFCI outlets to these areas is one of the most impactful safety upgrades you can make, and it’s relatively affordable.

GFCIs also have a lifespan. If yours are more than 10 to 15 years old, they should be tested and potentially replaced. A GFCI that doesn’t trip when you press the test button isn’t protecting you.

Smart Switches in Older Homes

Smart switches need a neutral wire at the switch box to power the WiFi radio and internal electronics. Homes built before the 1980s were typically wired with a switch loop that only brings the hot wire and switched hot to the switch box, no neutral.

This is the number one reason DIY smart switch installs fail in older LA homes. The switch won’t power on, or it flickers, or it works intermittently. We can run a neutral wire to the switch box or recommend smart switch models that work without one (a few brands handle this, though the options are limited).

When Is It Time to Replace an Electrical Outlet or Switch?

Chances are if yours is an older Los Angeles home and it’s been a while since an electrician has given your wiring a once over, the switches and outlets more than likely require an upgrade. However, it’s not merely the age of your home’s electrical system that matters, it’s how that system was originally installed and relays electricity today that also counts.

A switch/outlet upgrade is an immediate necessity if you have:

  • Builders grade outlets
  • Two-prong outlets
  • Old wiring connected via “backstabbing”

Our fully-licensed master electricians can improve the safety and performance of your switch and outlets by ensuring the connectivity of the circuit no longer relies on running through the device or appliance being used. Let Express Electrical Services help you usher your switches and outlets into the modern electrical age.

Electric outlet installation may also be necessary if you are needing an outlet in a location where there is not one currently. You may also wish to explore the option of GFCI outlet installation in areas where moisture is present in order to eliminate the risk of electric shock. Finally, if your outlet is showing signs of not functioning correctly it is important to have an outlet repair or replacement performed as soon as possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to replace an outlet?

A single outlet replacement is one of our most affordable service calls. Multiple outlets at the same visit bring the per-unit cost down. We’ll quote everything before starting.

Can I put a dimmer on any light?

Dimmers need to match the bulb type. LED bulbs require LED-rated dimmers. Ceiling fan motors need fan-speed controllers, not standard dimmers. We handle the matching.

How Long Does It Take to Replace an Electrical Outlet?

It usually doesn’t take longer than 30 minutes for an experienced professional to replace an outlet. But if they need to run wiring, open the wall, and repair drywall, the job can take up to two hours.

What Can Lead to Needing Electrical Outlet Repair or Replacement?

Age and wear will take a toll on outlets. When plugging and unplugging devices, the metal prongs scrape against the outlet’s terminals. Loose connections can occur over time or due to poor installation. Strong electrical currents can cause an outlet to burn out. If your home still has two-prong outlets, have an electrician replace them with safer three-prong units.

Should I upgrade to tamper-resistant outlets?

If you have young children, yes. Tamper-resistant outlets have spring-loaded shutters that block objects from being inserted. They’re required by code in all new installations, and we use them by default.

What areas do you cover?

We serve Los Angeles County, Orange County, Ventura County, and Riverside County.

How Many Years Can an Outlet Last?

Electrical outlets are generally quite durable. Most can last 15 to 25 years, and it’s not unheard of for one to last 50 years. But an electrical short or wear and tear may cause an outlet to fail in five years or less.
